Librairie Farairie, 43 Rue Araibi Jilali, and Librairie Nationale, 2 Av. de Mers Sultan, are also good for a browse. British newspapers and the International Herald Tribune are available from stands around Place des Nations Unies (and in the Hyatt Regency on the square) and at the Gare du Port.

The older communal theatre is nearby on Av. des F.A.R. and hosts visiting groups. The Centre Culturel Français, 121/3 Bd. Mohammed Zerktouni (tel 02/225 9077) has an extensive programme, particularly in winter: films, concerts, recitals, exhibitions, and library. Details of these, and other events are to be found in the local press, occasionally in the fortnightly La Quinzaine du Maroc , from the venues, from the tourist offices and in the major hotels.

Ferry agent Comanav Voyages, 30 Av. des F.A.R. (tel 02/248 4841, fax 248 4843), will give details and sell tickets for most ferry departures from Morocco.

Cinemas Casa is well served by cinemas. The Dawliz chain has two cinemas: Dawliz Habous (two screens) in the city near the Restaurant des Fleurs (and the Cinema Rif) and Dawliz Corniche (three screens) near McDonald's on the Corniche. Besides the Cinema Rif on Av. des F.A.R., there are the Empire on Av. Mohammed V, the Lusitania opposite the Hôtel Lausanne on Rue Tata and, said to be the best, the Lynx on Av Mers Sultan.

Shopping Alpha 55, Av. de Mers Sultan, is a useful department store, with a good, 7th-floor restaurant. For Moroccan crafts, there are many shops on both sides of Bd. Felix Houphouet Boigny; here you might gain extra by bargaining but, at the upmarket boutiques at the Centre 2000, you can expect to pay more. Supermarkets are mainly out of the town centre; there are two on Route Bouskara, in L'Oasis district: Macro and, with a Pizza Hut as an added attraction, Marjane. There is another Macro in Aïn Sebaa.

Sports Casa is the best place in Morocco to see football; the city's rivals, RAJA and WYDAD both have grounds in the Beausejour district; check the local press for fixtures. The city also boasts a racecourse, the Hippodrome, at Anfa (active some Sundays) and, beside it, a 9-hole golf course (tel 02/236 5355, fax 239 3374); there is another golf course with 18 holes at Mohammedia to the northeast (tel 02/332 4656, fax 232 1102). As well as the beach clubs on the Corniche, you can swim in the open-air Piscine Oceanic in Aïn Sebaa. In the Maarif district, there is the Stade d'Honneur, a sports complex (tel 02/236 2372) with a lot to offer. Finally, and not strictly sport, if you have children to entertain, there is the Sindibad amusement park beyond the hotels on the Corniche, with a huge cut-out of Sinbad, plus pedalos, dodgems, roundabouts and slides.

Tours If you want to book onto a tour of Morocco, KTI Voyages, based in Casa, are a very reliable operator, used by British companies like Hayes & Jarvis and Kuoni; their head office is at 161 Av. Hassan II (tel 02/227 6244). If you want to see a lot in a short time, and are rich, you could fly from Casa Anfa with Privair (tel 02/213 8639) to the destination of your choice.
