I used to live in an apartment right next to the Pearl Tower (for a year), which gave me a view of it from my bedroom window. It lights up and changes colours when the night falls. This can either be exciting or tacky depending on how you see it.
The Grand Hyatt next to it (Jinmao, in Mandarin) was the tallest hotel in the world when it was built, I'm not sure if it is anymore, but a Park Hyatt is being built very near it, and I'm pretty sure that that will be the tallest hotel in the world upon completion.
There is a museum on the ground floor (to my recollection) which introduces you to a little of Shanghai's history and culture, both Chinese and Western (concessions, Western influences, how Shanghai manages to blend it into its own culture, etcetera). The museum also includes an exhibition of old cars, trams and traditional Chinese vehicles which used to be driven around Shanghai before its modernisation.
Shanghai has a problem with pollution so it tends to be a little grey and dusty during the day, so if you're going up the tower for a cityscape photograph of Shanghai, I suggest you go when it's dark (when the whole city lights up). You can also take fantastic cityscapes of Shanghai from the Bund, again, this looks better at night.
The Pearl Tower is Shanghai's Eiffel Tower, just a little tacky and far less historical. It's an icon, I guess it's one of those attractions you "must" see to say that you've been there.
amazing when lit

I was attending a conference in Shanghai Intl Convention Centre, which is right next to the perl tower. I could see the tower at different times during the day. The architecture is very very impressive and you get a real kick when you see it with the lights... Great!
Worth Visiting

The place is really worth seeing. The ride up to the 276th floor is so fast, unbelievable. The restraurant on the top floor offers average food but is it not that bad, even for European stomachs, but it is no thrill, the view is however phanstastic and it is not so crowded like the visitors floors below. The style of service in China is different so do not compare it with USA or other countries and take it as it is. Especially the museum in the basement is a must, never have been to such a wonderful place before! Go there and enjoy the histrory of Shanghai!
Done the Oriental Pearl Tower? Down in the lobby is a most fascinating museum.

After a visit to the top of the Oriental Pearl Tower , Shanghai,in May 2006, found my ticket included admission to the Urban Development History Museum down in the basement.
It consists of 6 halls that seem to go on forever, taking one back in time to chart the urban history of this fascinating city.
Many of the waxworks and street scenes are life size and as you meander your way through an historical timeline, make sure you have enough time as there is so much to take in and observe.
There is a transportation exhibition / overview of the old city plus an architectural landscape of the Shanghai at the beginning of the 20th century.
At times the sheer volume of waxwork figures, meticulously made, can be quite overwhelming, especially as all are set within themed sections. There is a hall that depicts "the Metropolis infested with Foreign adventures". For example, the influx of foreign film makers. Then there are exhibits depicting traces of old Shanghai, with scenes such as an opium den and
a courtroom drama to name but a few.
It was certainly worth the visit and gives one an excellent overview of Shanghai's urban history.
To view the museum only is RMB35 or RMB100 including the Pearl Tower.
If you cannot face a hectic day on the Puxi side then this makes for an enjoyable and less stressful experience.
Ever wondered who cleans the Oriental Pearl Tower,Shanghai?

In May 2006, like many visitors to Shanghai, read up about finding the best vantage point to see this amazing city from a great height.
Did the Cloud Nine view from the Jin MaoTower, Grand Hyatt Hotel but then thought ...why not pay RMB 100 and go up to the observation posts of the Pearl Tower?
Both views were so amazing and well worth the expensive drinks at Cloud Nine / the L7 views from the Pearl Tower.
But an even more amazing sight was the spectacle of chinese guys hanging by ropes, cleaning the tower! A truly awesome sight.
