Indonesia is also one of the world's premier surfing destinations, with an enormous variety of class waves and perfect, uncrowded breaks. The best-known waves are found on Bali, G' Land (Grajagan) on Java, and Nias off Sumatra. Sumbawa's Hu'u and Pulau Roti have been hot spots for a few years now, and Sumba, Savu and the Mentawi Islands are the destinations of the future. In June and July, during the best and most consistent surf, you can expect waves to be crowded, especially in Java and Bali. For all-in surf safaris on luxury yachts, try STC ( surftrav@ozemail.com.au), who have boat trips around all major destinations. Try to bring your own board , and a padded board-bag; most public transport charge extra for boards. Also pack high-strength sun block; plenty of iodine, a helmet and thin suit are advisable too.
