All city buses charge a set Rp500 and begin and end their journeys at the Umbulharjo bus station. Most buses stop running at about 6pm, although the #15 runs to the GPO until 8pm . The most useful buses for travellers are the #4, which runs south down Jalan Malioboro before heading to Kota Gede and the Umbulharjo bus station; and the #5 running between Umbulharjo and Jomber via Jalan Sosrowijayan (when heading north) and the GPO (when returning to Umbulharjo).

There are literally thousands of becak in Yogya, and they are the most convenient form of transport. It should cost no more than Rp500 from Jalan Sosro to the GPO (Rp1500 from Jalan Prawirotaman), although hard bargaining is required. The horse-drawn carriages, known as andong , which tend to queue up along Jalan Malioboro, are a little cheaper. Taxis are good value (Rp800, plus Rp400 per km). You can usually find them hanging around the GPO, or ring either Jas (tel 0274/373388), Setia Kawan (tel 0274/522333) or Sumber Rejo (tel 0274/514786). Yogya is a flat city, so you might want to rent a bicycle : try Bike 33 in Jl Sosro Gang I (Rp5000 per day). Orange-suited parking attendants throughout the city will look after your bike for Rp100. You can rent a Honda Astrea motorbike for Rp40,000 per day from Fortuna 1 and 2 near the train station at Jl Jlagran Lor 20-21 and Jl Pasar Kembang 60 (tel 0274/564680 or 589550).
