Yogya's specialities are ayam goreng and nasi gudeg (rice and jackfruit), and many foodstalls serve nothing else. Every evening a food market sets up on Jalan Malioboro, and by 8pm the entire street is thronged with diners. Beware of being overcharged, and note that in many of the larger lesehan places (where you sit on the floor by low tables), particularly those by the end of Jalan Sosro, diners pay restaurant prices. The stalls by the train station and on the top floor of the Malioboro Mall are cheaper. Jalan Sosro and Jalan Prawirotaman are chock-full of good-quality restaurants asking reasonable prices (about Rp3000 for nasi goreng). Most of these restaurants open from midday until about 10pm.

If you're looking for a drink, try the Laba Laba on Jalan Prawirotaman, an over-priced restaurant and bar , with weird cocktails a speciality. The Borobudur Bar, on Jalan Pasar Kembang by the northern end of Sosro Gang I, is one of the few places that stays open beyond midnight, attracting locals, expats and tourists.
