Laos is one of the last countries in Southeast Asia whose minorities have not been totally assimilated into the culture of the majority. The Lao government officially divides the population into three brackets, according to the elevation at which they live, though there is often no link between peoples in these brackets as many unrelated ethnic groups may reside at any one elevation.
