The
airport
lies 2km northeast of the city on Route 13, and is served by tuk-tuks. The Lao Aviation office (tel 031/212252) is on No. 11 Road, near BCEL bank. Pakxe has two bus stations, both of which are served by tuk-tuks to hotels (2000K).
Buses
to and from the north use the
Northern Bus Station
, 7km north of the city on Route 13. Passengers arriving late from Savannakhet and Vientiane may be forced to pay a little extra to get from the deserted terminal into the town centre. The best way to get to the Northern Bus Station is to catch a pick-up from the ferry landing stand; get to the bus station early in the morning as there are a limited number of departures.
Buses to and from points south and east use the
Southern Bus Station
, 8km east of town on Route 13. Some bus drivers briefly stop short of the southern station, giving you the chance to avoid the chaotic bus station which also doubles as a market. Tuk-tuks leave regularly for the Southern Bus Station (2000K) from the stand on the Xe Don River near the ferry landing; alternatively, flag down any tuk-tuk or sawngthaew headed east. Most towns in the south are served by one or two buses a day, which tend to leave early in the morning. If you're headed to Muang Khong and other points along Route 13 South be prepared for some of the most crowded bus conditions in the country. An express van departs for Attapu from the Southern Bus Station daily in the early afternoon - arrive early as seating is limited.
Ferries
to and from Ban Muang Kao, the terminus for taxis and sawngthaews from the border crossing at Chong Mek, and
passenger boats
to and from from Champasak and Si Phan Don dock at the Xe Don landing on No. 11 Road, an easy walk to most hotels. Boats to Champasak (5000K) and Muang Sen (12,000K) in Si Phan Don leave daily in the mornings; arrive early.
