Pakxe has the best range of
restaurants
in the south, most of which open for breakfast and operate well into the evening. Easily the best restaurant in town,
May Kham,
on the corner of Route 13 and No. 12 Road, offers an extensive array of reasonably priced Chinese dishes. The most popular with travellers is
Sedone,
close to the central market on No. 5 Road, which offers cheap Chinese, Lao and Thai dishes as well as solid breakfasts, fruit shakes and decent chips. The other travellers' magnet is the nearby
Xuan Mai,
No. 5 Road, a hit-and-miss Vietnamese eatery, run out of a dirty corner shop-house (closed Sun mornings). The
Noodle Shop,
No. 46 Road, is recommended for its big, zesty bowls of
fõe
served with beef and fresh vegetables out of a small store front, and
Tone Phao Khou,
No. 9 Road, near
VannaPha
guesthouse, is the place to go if you want to sample Mekong River fish and bottles of
lào ya,
medicinal whisky. The two
bars
in the town proper -
Sai Khong,
on No. 9 Road near the Mekong River, and
Sengtawan Cabaret,
above the ferry landing - both offer live bands and taxi dancing. A more peaceful spot for a beer is the stall under the shady trees directly above the ferry landing.
