Pashupatinath
Nepal's holiest Hindu pilgrimage site, Pashupatinath, comes complete with erotic carvings, ritual bathers and ascetic monks performing gruesome penances. At a respectful distance are the funeral pyres of the sacred Bhagmati River.

Trekking in the Everest Region
Climbing in the Everest region will take you from dense rhododendron forests into the permafrost of the Himalayas, across gorges, glacial lakes and Sherpa villages with staggering views of the highest mountains in the world.

Durbar Square
Kathmandu's main handicrafts market comes alive each morning in Durbar Square, with sleepy cows and red-robed monks padding softly amongst the stalls. For a slice of local life, have breakfast at any of the nearby cheap eateries.

Rafting on the Kali Gandaki
Shooting serious white water one moment, drifting serenely through the jungle the next, a three-day rafting trip on the Kali Gandaki River will satisfy the philosopher and the adrenaline junkie in you.

Bhaktapur
A flashback to medieval Nepal, the perfectly preserved city of Bhaktapur with its mud-brick, carved wood and sculpted brass, is famous for its royal palace and huge stone bells.

Mountain-Biking the Kodari Trail
A nightmare by bus, paradise by bicycle, a four-day round trip on the Kodari trail takes in hot springs, remote roadhouses and glimpses of Tibet.

Yoga and Meditation
Even a sceptic can't help but be drawn towards spiritual pursuits whilst in Nepal. The Ananda Yoga Centre caters for most of them in a lovely part of the Kathmandu valley.

Swayambhu
Monkeys and shaven-headed pilgrims overrun Swayambhu, the gigantic hilltop stupa. It's the pole star of Nepali Buddhism and an eye opener for the most jaded temple tourer.

Pokhara Lakeside
Pokhara Lakeside is a backpacker's dream: panoramic views of the Annapurna range obscured by mountains of pizza and apple pie. The ultimate place to kick back and relax.
