Devonport's range of places to eat is rapidly catching up with Auckland's major foodie hangouts with plenty of worthwhile lunch stops and a several quality restaurants for evening dining .

The Cod Piece , 26 Victoria Rd. Sit in and take-out fish and chip place cheekily named by the gay owners who recently earned the wrath of prim Devonport residents for the "more than a mouthful" sign which has now been removed. Gourmet burgers too.

Manuka , 49 Victoria Rd. Wood-fired piazza restaurant that's good at any time of the day for light snacks and salads or just for coffee and cake.

Monsoon , 71 Victoria Rd (tel 09/445 4263). There is seldom a bad word said about this excellent value-for-money Thai/Malaysian place with tasty dishes such as fish and Tiger prawns in a red curry sauce for around $16. Evenings only. Licensed.

Porterhouse Blue , 58 Calliope Rd (tel 09/445 0309). Devonport's finest: white tablecloths and impeccable service provide the setting for meals which might start with lamb brains or goat's cheese and artichoke ravioli and continue with roasted ribeye with a baked tomato and mushy pea pie. Expect to pay $60 for three courses without wine. Evening only, closed Sun. Licensed.

The Stone Oven , 3 Clarence St. Large, bustling bakery and café with a solid reputation for organic sourdough, black Russian and barley rye breads; also popular for quiches, pies, sandwiches, cakes and pastries to take away or eat in, accompanied by aromatic coffee.
