Suburban multiplexes have virtually killed off smaller cinemas leaving central Auckland with just one twelve-screen monstrosity and one arthouse screen;
repertory
cinemas are more widely scattered, and are listed below. The annual
Auckland International Film Festival
, usually held in early July, presses many of these cinemas into service for arthouse and foreign screenings.
Admission
is around $12, though many cinemas drop their admission to $7 before 6pm on weekdays.
Academy
, 64 Lorne St (tel 09/373 2761). Predominantly arthouse cinema tucked underneath the main library.
Capitol Cinema
, 610 Dominion Rd, Balmoral (tel 09/623 2276). Tucked away in the southern suburbs, this is the place to go for off-beat art films.
Devonport 3
, 56 Victoria Rd, Devonport (tel 09/445 4470). First-run Hollywood movies. Accessible from the city with Fullers' Ferry & Movie Pass for much the same price you'd pay for just the movie on Queen Street.
Force Entertainment Centre
, Queen St (tel 09/915 2222). Twelve-screen multiplex and Imax in the heart of the city.
Hollywood
, 20 St Georges Rd, Avondale, 6km southwest of the city centre (tel 09/828 8393). Mainstream movies through the week and classics on weekend afternoons, often with accompaniment from the Wurlitzer organ.
