For eating there is little reason to venture beyond the Four Avenues, in fact you'll find most of what you need in the grid of downtown streets close to Cathedral Square, notably along Colombo Street, Cashel Street, Manchester Street and High Street. One area which deserves special mention is Oxford Terrace between Cashel and Gloucester streets. This is what's recently become known as "The Strip", a run of restaurant/bars that all spill out onto pavement seating with views across the street to the River Avon. There's plenty of good dining, and as the evening wears on the lights go down, the music gets cranked up and booze flows freely. The clubbing set usually pops in for a couple of hours around 10.30pm before drifting off to livelier dancefloors
