cafés
, but most residents prefer takeout - traditional dishes or fast food - to dining out. Dining in Freeport/Lucaya is predictably expensive, though there are a few cheap eateries around, if you look for them.
Cally's
in the Port Lucaya Marketplace. Serving tasty and affordable Greek and Bahamian dishes, including Greek salad and savoury grilled vegetable wraps. Cheerful and relaxed atmosphere, with indoor and outdoor seating on the wooden verandah.
Calypso Café

resort. A cheerful, busy place for breakfast or lunch, with plentiful buffets; coffee and pastries à la carte.
Churchill's Chophouse

resort. An elegant glass-and-mahogany dining room open for dinner only, serving steak, lobster and other seafood dishes and a fine selection of vintage wines.
The Ferry House
on the waterfront at Port Lucaya tel 242/373-1595. Featuring an imaginative menu with dishes like grouper braised in Nassau Royale sauce and shrimp with a ginger glace, as well as staples like chicken and pasta. Elegant dining room is sunny and inviting at breakfast, and candlelit with harbour views at dinner.

Irie's
behind Breaker's Cay,

resort. A cosy, colonial-Caribbean house featuring Cuban, Jamaican, Puerto Rican and Haitian cuisine, with traditional stews and seafood dishes like snapper steamed in banana leaf and served with plantains and voodoo fritters. Expensive.
The Main Sail

Varied menu changes daily and may include lobster bisque, salmon with dill, beef stroganoff and, of course, wiener schnitzel. US$20-30.
The Prop Club

resort. A casual restaurant and sports bar decked out like an airplane hanger. Inexpensive menu features margarita pizza, chicken, ribs and tropical drinks. With a pool table and nightly music and dancing.

outside Count Basie Square. A busy, outdoor patio restaurant serving a moderately priced international menu.
