OISTINS
READ IT HERE
East from St Lawrence Gap, OISTINS is the main town along the south coast and one of its less touristed parts. A couple of buses run here from Bridgetown, as does route taxi 11, which continues to Silver Sands. The unusual name is a corruption of Austin, one of the first landowners in the area, described by an early historian as "a wild, mad drunken fellow, whose lewd and extravagant carriage made him infamous in the island". Austin is long gone, but it's still a busy little town, dominated by a fish market, that retains an authentic sense of Barbados before the tourist boom. The best time to visit is in the evening, when a dozen shacks in the central Bay Garden sell fried fish straight from the boats, and on Friday nights hundreds of people descend for a "lime", the local term for a social gathering.
