The west side of the island, with its main area of settlement,
WEST END
, is home to Tortola's resort scene, more relaxed than Road Town and with an abundance of excellent
beaches
, seafront accommodation and nightlife. Popular with yachters and landlubbers alike, the anchorage of
Soper's Hole
, a quaint collection of shops, restaurants and lodgings, is located just across the bay from the West End ferry docks. However, most of the resorts, hotels and small inns are clustered either around
Steele Point
, at the very western tip of the island, or along the stunning beaches and in the hills above
Long Bay, Apple Bay, Carrot Bay
and especially
Cane Garden Bay
. The western end is also the party side of Tortola; aside from the entertainment laid on by hotels, there are local favourites ranging from
Bomba's
wild full-moon parties to BVI reggae great Quito Rhymer. Tourist sights are few and far between but the
Callwood Rum Distillery
(officially Mon-Sat 8.30am-6pm but hours are erratic; US$1 for a short tour) at the west end of Cane Garden Bay provides an interesting behind-the-scenes look at one of the BVI's most popular products. It still makes rum in copper vats the same way islanders did centuries ago and there's a chance to buy some of the tipple in the shop.
