Parque Colón and the Cathedral
Parque Colón is a pleasant, bustling open space containing a statue of Columbus in its centre; surrounded by beautiful colonial and Victorian buildings, including the city's sixteenth-century cathedral, the oldest in the New World.
Calle de las Damas
Cobblestoned Calle de Las Damas, the city's oldest road, is where you'll find Santo Domingo's earliest stone mansions alongside the sixteenth-century Fortaleza Ozama and the Panteón Nacional, which was once a Jesuit church.
Plaza España
The centre of colonial power and commerce in the 1500s, Plaza España still houses both the renovated palace of the Columbus family and the Casas Reales, which holds an exceptional museum.
The Malecón
Dubbed "The World's Largest Disco" by the Guinness Book of World Records, the capital's famous oceanfront boardwalk is lined with nightclubs, restaurants, high-rise hotels and outdoor beer halls.
Plaza de la Cultura
A complex of four museums alongside the National Theatre and Library. Best are the Museo de Arte Moderno, dedicated to contemporary Dominican art, and the Museo del Hombre, Dominicano's impressive collection of Taino artefacts.
La Guácara Taina
The most famous nightclub in the city, set in a mammoth, multi-level cave that was once inhabited by the Taino Indians, with top local merengue acts nightly.
Espíritu Santo Festival
Located in the city's outer barrios, this Syncretic religious festival features ecstatic processions snaking through the streets and a long line of
palos
drums being played 24 hours a day for nine straight days.
Los Tres Ojos
A scenic series of four enormous caverns dotted with fresh-water lagoons. Before Columbus, the Tainos used them for religious ceremonies; more recently they've been the setting for some half-dozen Tarzan movies.
