Evening activity is officially curtailed in Antigua by a "dry law" which forbids the sale of alcohol after 1am. The places we've listed on 5 and 7 avenidas norte are particularly popular with the gringo crowd and all open at around 7pm. Antigua's dance scene is burgeoning, drawing a big crowd from Guatemala City. The venues tend to be very quiet Monday to Wednesday, busy Thursday and heaving at weekends.

There are a number of small video cinemas that show a range of Western films on a daily basis - Trainspotting, Salvador and Buena Vista Social Club are on almost permanently. Fliers with weekly listings are posted on noticeboards all over town. The main cinemas are Cinema Bistro (5 Av Sur 14), Cinemaya (6 C Pte 7), and Maya Moon (6 Av Nte 1A), while the Proyecto Cultural El Sitio (5 C Pte 15) also shows a good choice of Latin American and art-house movies.
