Flores
unquestionably offers the most cosmopolitan dining in Petén and there are a number of good restaurants, many with delightful lakeside views, though prices are a little higher than elsewhere in Guatemala.
Santa Elena
has a very limited selection of comedores, so even if you're staying there you may want to cross the causeway for an evening out. Many restaurants here also serve
wild game
, often listed on menus as
comida silvestre
. Virtually all this has been taken illegally from reserves and you should avoid ordering items such as
tepescuintle
(paca, a large relation of the guinea-pig),
venado
(deer), or
coche de monte
(peccary, or wild pig).
