Despite appearances, Guatemala City quietens down very quickly in the evenings, and nightlife is certainly not one of its strengths. The best bet for a night out in Zona 1 is to start at somewhere like El Tiempo and then check out what's on at La Bodeguita del Centro . If you crave low life, then stroll on down 18 C, to the junction with 9 Av, and you're in the heart of the red-light district , where the bars and clubs are truly sleazy.

The Zona Viva in Zona 10 is where the wealthy go to have fun, though it's anything but an egalitarian experience. House music is now firmly established in Guatemala, though you'll be lucky to get anything other than the standard, commercial "handbag" strain. Most city DJs spin a mix of pan-Latin sounds and pop-rave hits, with the merengue of the Caribbean often being spiced up with raggamuffin vocals. There are also specialist clubs for salsa fanatics. The city's premier reggae bar is La Gran Comal on Via 4 between 6 Av and Ruta 6, Zona 4. Cinemas
Most movies are shown in English with Spanish subtitles. There are four cinemas on 6 Av between the Parque Central and the Police HQ. Elsewhere, the very best for sound quality is the Magic Place on Av las Américas, Zona 13. Also recommended...
