There's no purpose-built bus station in Puerto Barrios. Litegua
buses
, which serve all destinations along the Caribbean Highway, have their own terminal in the centre of town on 6 Av, between 9 and 10 C. All second-class buses, including ten daily services to Chiquimula and four daily to Esquipulas, arrive and depart close by from several bays grouped around the central market opposite.
Taxis
seem to be everywhere in Barrios; drivers toot for custom as they drive through the streets. A daily Taca
flight
from Guatemala City lands at the airstrip about 3km northeast of the town centre (call Taca on 334 7722 for details).
There's no Inguat tourist office in town: check at the Litegua terminal for bus schedules and at the
dock
at the end of 12 C for boat departures to Lívingston and to Punta Gorda in Belize. You have to clear
migración
(daily 7am-noon & 2-5pm; tel 334 7722) before you can buy a ticket, which is best done the day before departure: the
migración
is at the end of 9 C, two blocks north of the dock. The
Telgua
office (daily 7am-midnight) is at the junction of 8 Av and 10 C, though you'll find the best international call rates at
Comunitel
, 7 C and 5 Av (daily 8am-10pm); the best
Internet
café is
Cafenet
at 13 C and 6 Av (daily 9am-9pm). There are a number of
banks
in Puerto Barrios: you'll find Lloyds on the corner of 7 Av and 15 C (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm, Sat 9am-1pm), Banco G & T Continental (for Mastercard) at 7 C and 6 Av (Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat 9am-1pm), and Banco Industrial (with a 24hr Visa-friendly ATM) at 7 Av and 7 C. The
post office
is at 6 C and 6 Av (Mon-Fri 8am-4.30pm).
