Getting to Honduras
from Puerto Barrios is now straightforward, thanks to the opening of the new Arizona bridge over the Río Motagua. Minibuses depart from the marketplace in Puerto Barrios (every 30min; 6.30am-4.30pm) and head via the small town of Entre Ríos to the Arizona bridge (1hr), where there's a new Guatemalan
migración
- you may be asked for an unofficial "exit tax" (US$1). You then have to catch a pick-up to the village of
Corinto
, just inside Honduras a further 8km away, where you'll find the Honduran
migración
and plenty of moneychangers offering fairly reasonable rates. (Note that these details might change, as there are plans to open a bi-national border post close to Arizona in 2002 or 2003 as part of a Central American trade initative.) Buses depart from Corinto to Puerto Cortés (every 90min; at least 3hr) via the pretty village of Omoa. If you set out early from Puerto Barrios, you should get to San Pedro Sula the same day, and it's certainly possible to make an afternoon flight out to one of the Bay Islands. San Pedro Sula is extremely well connected with Puerto Cortés by Citul and other buses (every 30min 5am-7.30pm; 1hr 15min); the Citul terminal is located just across the plaza from the
migración
.
