With its calm waters and incredible white beaches,
WEST END
, 14km from Coxen Hole, makes the most of its ideal setting, gearing itself mainly towards independent travellers on all budgets, with a good selection of attractive accommodation. Set in the southwest corner of the island, round a shallow bay, the village has retained a laid-back charm, and the gathering pace of tourist development has done little to dent the locals' friendliness.
The paved road from Coxen Hole finishes at the northern end of the community, not far from
Half Moon Bay
, a beautifully sheltered sandy beach ringed with hotels. Turning to the south at the end of the paved road from Coxen Hole, a sandy track runs alongside the water's edge through the heart of West End, passing a merry bunch of guesthouses, bars and restaurants, set between patches of coconut palms. You can
rent cars
from Roatán Rentals, at the north of West End, or Sandy Bay Rent-a-Car close by; Captain Van's rents out bicycles, mopeds and motorbikes (though their rates are pricey). The sole
Internet
café,
Chit Chat Flat
, located towards the southern end of West End, charges $12 an hour for pretty lethargic connections.
