For a tiny island, Saba has a surprising variety of places to eat , with restaurants in most of the hotels and a good series of other places in Windwardside. As you'd expect, the local cuisine is heavily geared towards seafood.

Brigadoon Windwardside tel 599/416-2380. Set in an attractive old Saban house on the edge of the village, this friendly little place offers creole fish dishes featuring grouper and snapper, as well as more typical chicken, steak and lobster options. Reckon on around US$30 for three courses without wine. Open daily for dinner.

Cranston's The Bottom tel 599/416-3202. Tasty food served all day among the tropical flowers in the garden of Saba's oldest hotel, with local fish specials running around US$10 for lunch and US$15 in the evenings. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Guido's Windwardside tel 599/416-2230. The main island nightspot and pool hall, offering perfunctory food including burgers and pizzas for US$6-10. Open Monday to Friday for dinner only.

In Two Deep Fort Bay tel 599/416-3438. A good place to catch up on some lunch after a dive trip, In Two Deep offers inexpensive sandwiches, burgers and pizza, and fine views across the ocean and the tiny harbour. Open daily for breakfast and lunch.

Scout's Windwardside tel 599/416-2205. One of the busiest places during mealtimes, particularly in the evening when the diving crowd stops in. The rotis and burgers are good and cheap, while dinner often includes a fixed price three-course menu for under US$20. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Swinging Doors Windwardside tel 599/416-2506. Daily specials are chalked up outside this lively and pub-like saloon, with staples like chicken, burgers and ribs and moderately priced barbecues on Tuesday and Friday nights. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Tropics Café Windwardside tel 599/416-2469. Friendly and inexpensive café offering large muffins and croissants to dunk in your coffee for breakfast and perfectly adequate sandwiches, burgers and omelettes at lunchtime, plus pitta pockets for US$6 and salads from US$7. Dinner options are more sophisticated - contemplate sweet pea and basil soup for US$6 and a seafood "pillow" with a variety of fish for US$14. Closed Sun.

Y11K Windwardside tel 599/416-2539. Probably the pick of the island's eateries. Eat inside or (better) out on the wooden deck overlooking Mount Scenery. There are good chicken and shrimp salads to graze on for around US$10, inexpensive sandwiches for snacking or, for dinner or to celebrate the end of a great hike, surf and turf for US$18 and pasta dishes running US$8-15. Open Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.
