Dracula's Castle, Bran
The castle at Bran is all you'd expect Dracula's castle to be, with its mock-Gothic towers soaring against the backdrop of the Bucegi mountains, and its maze of narrow passages and secret staircases. It actually has very little to do with Vlad the Impaler (aka "Dracula") but it's worth a visit.

Train Travel
Travelling by train in Romania is a fascinating experience: you're always guaranteed plenty of interaction with other passengers, but for scenic splendour, nothing beats the main line between Sinaia and Brasov, which skirts the eastern flank of the ravishing Bucegi mountains.

The Black Church, Brasov
Brasov's Black Church is one of the greatest monuments of Gothic architecture in Transylvania. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries, and blackened by the torches of the Austrian army in 1689, it contains many Anatolian prayer rugs, Romania's largest church organ and a huge bell.

The Village Museum, Bucharest
The Village Museum in the north of Bucharest has the best range of preserved rural peasants' buildings in Romania, from dug-out homes from Draghiceni with vegetables growing on the roof, to windmills from the Danube Delta.

Drinking
Alcohol has been a vital part of life in Romania, and locally made spirits are strong and cheap. Don't be surprised if you're offered a firey plum brandy, tuica , or its even more distilled version, palinka , for breakfast.
