Slovenia's unit of currency is the tolar, which is divided into 100 (virtually worthless) stotini. Coins come in denominations of 50 stotini and 1, 2, 5 and 10 tolars; and there are notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10,000 tolars. Prices are usually followed by the initials SIT. The exchange rate is currently approximately 350SIT to £1, and 240SIT to $1.

Banks ( banka ) are generally open Mon-Fri 8.30am-12.30pm & 2-5pm and Sat 8.30am-11/12pm. Money can also be changed in tourist offices, post offices, travel agencies and exchange bureaux ( menjalnica ), all of which have more flexible hours. Travellers' cheques and credit cards are widely accepted; and you can use credit cards to get cash advances from ATMs and in the bigger banks.

Prices for accommodation and tours are sometimes given in Deutschmarks - although payment is usually made in tolars
