WELCOME
You are cordially invited to enjoy the beauty and comfort of our historic Vermont home. Forty Putney Road is an elegant French Provincial estate overlooking the West River and The Hogle Wildlife Sanctuary, but just an easy ten minute walk to downtown Brattleboro. The lawns and gardens are landscaped with stately specimen trees, including one of the largest Japanese Maples in the United States. You will feel at home and at ease, whether on vacation or business.
Forty Putney Road was built in 1930 for Dr.Charles Ripley, the director of the Brattleboro Retreat, a large, private mental hospital, established in 1834. It remained a home for various Retreat directors until the early 1980’s, when it became a private residence. It has been a bed & breakfast since the early 1990’s. The trees and gardens date from when the house was built.
Lindsay and Lowell Hanson welcome you to
their home at Forty Putney Road Bed & Breakfast.
Both are retired school teachers from Colorado and are enjoying Brattleboro and the fun of meeting so many interesting guests. Snoop is a mixed breed, 10 year old, sweetdog who also enjoys all the visitors at the Inn.
COME INSIDE
A delicious, full Vermont breakfast is served each day, on the patio in warm weather, or in our breakfast room. You are invited to read the morning paper with an early cup of coffee or tea.
Feel free to play the piano or guitar or play a game of chess or Scrabble. Use the extensive library of guide books to plan your activities, such as biking, hiking, golfing, canoeing, kayaking, antiquing, cross-country or downhill skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling.
Our Inn is set up with a wireless DSL service so guests are able to easily browse the web from their rooms or downstairs. We also have dialup modem connection in the rooms.
PUTNEY ROAD PUB
Our cozy pub is an intimate place to enjoy a glass of beer, wine or champagne. There is a local Vermont beer on tap and several others in bottles. The extensive wine collection includes over 30 wines from around the world. Wine is available by the glass or bottle and may be enjoyed in the house or in the backyard. A laptop computer with DSL service is provided in the pub for checking email or surfing the web.

Superb trees shade private little corners where you can relax and listen to the fountains, or, enjoy a hike along the river path maintained by the city and entered directly from our gardens. Try Croquet, Bacce or Badmiton for easy impromptu fun with your family or group.
From Forty Putney, stroll a few blocks past the park to downtown Brattleboro and it’s many fine restaurants, theaters, art galleries, bookstores, numerous sports outfitters, and other unique shops. The center of many special events in Southern Vermont, Brattleboro is home to many special music events.
Good bike routes for all levels, as well as wonderful canoeing and kayaking waters are also close at hand. Fall brings spectacular foliage throughout Vermont.
