Imagine sitting by a slow flowing river with the coals of a dying campfire capturing your gaze. The breeze off the river is cool and mixes comfortably with the fading warmth of the embers. As the sun sets over the water your mind wanders to the time available to simply reflect. No phones, no loud neighbors, no blaring boom boxes, just the twitter of the evening fauna and the crackle from the fire.
Whether you like to fish, hike, hunt, look for geodes, mushrooms or blackberries or simply need to relax RiverView is the place for you. There is endless reading material in the cabins, friendly farm animals. There’s a small creek to wade in, an old abandoned coal mine to explore and 300 acres of woods and prairie to simply wander around in. This is where you fall asleep to the smell of oaks logs dying in the fire ring, the chirp of crickets and the satisfaction that you spent a day on your self and your comfort. And your family will feel the same way!

DESMOINES RIVER- this river is a paddler’s heaven for the 400+ miles that meanders through Iowa. The River will take you back in time with its remote setting and beautiful scenery. Sand bars, rock bars, and sometimes a waist deep wading hole are all part of the enjoyment here. This is truly one of Iowa’s greatest treasures and can be enjoyed from the doorsteps of RiverView Canoes and Campground.
LAKE SUGEMA- is a multi-purpose lake that offers some of the best, if not the best, fishing in southeast Iowa. The 574-acre lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, channel and catfish. The area immediately surrounding the lake, about 3,000 acres, has been purchased by the DNR and Van Buren County to be managed as a wildlife area. That management is helping to build on the number of wild turkey, deer, squirrel, geese, quail, rabbits, songbirds, and other wild animals.
SHIMEK STATE FOREST- one of Iowa’s best kept secrets may be Shimek State Forest nestled along the Des Moines River. Nearly 9,000 acres of oak and hickory hills and valleys, with more than 1,000 acres of pine plantations interspersed. This State forest provides the visitor with a look at multipurpose woodland used for timber production, wildlife management and recreational opportunities.
FISHING - whether you enjoy fishing in the Des Moines River, one of the many area ponds or the famous Lake Sugema, we guarantee you will have a good time. Many of our area species include; Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Walleye, White Bass, Flathead Catfish, and Saugeye.
