Our location is the key to your success! We’re located on one of the largest Salmon migration routes in the Pacific Northwest and within reach of the Gulf of Alaska. The majority of our fishing is performed only minutes from our resort on the calm, tranquil Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska’s Sumner Strait. Our fishing region supports Chinook, Coho, Chum, Sockeye and Pink Salmon, halibut, Ling and True Cod and over twenty-five species of rockfish in the saltwater. In the freshwater, you can fish for all five species of salmon, Steelhead, Dolly Varden, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout.
Wooden Wheel Lodge offers avid hunters the best of both worlds, hunting and fishing adventures out of one location on Prince of Wales Island. From the lodge, self-guided hunters have the opportunity to harvest record book Black Bears in the spring or Sitka Blacktail Deer, bears and waterfowl in the fall.
In the spring we offer self-guided Black Bear hunts in combination with guided fresh and saltwater fishing. The average bears harvested in our region are seven foot with a skull size of 22 inches. If you know bears, these are dandies. During the peak of the Black Bear season in the Spring, May 10th through the 30th, hunters can change their hats for guided fishing after King Salmon, Steelhead, halibut, over 30 species of rockfish, Dolly Varden, Rainbow and Cutthroat trout. During the fall, September 1st through the 30th, self-guided hunters can harvest World-Class Sitka Blacktail Deer and Black Bear. Not only can our clients be guided for fishing, but also for some of the best waterfowl hunting for puddlers, geese or sea ducks in the Pacific Northwest.
Property amenities:
Wooden Wheel Lodge is a two-story hand crafted cedar lodge, which provides clean, comfortable accommodations and fine dining in a cozy atmosphere. The lodge limits the number of guests per week to allow for a more personal experience. This also allows us to get to know each guest and to cater to each and every guest personally.
The lodge overlooks beautiful Port Protection. From the Great room and balcony you can enjoy a spectacular view of soaring eagles, frolicking otters and scenic Sumner Strait, part of Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. The community also has an extensive boardwalk system, which makes for a lovely after dinner stroll through the rainforest and along the beaches.
The lodge is currently set up to accommodate eight guests. Guest accommodations are within the main lodge. At this time our guest rooms are set up with either a queen/full bed combination or a full/twin combination. We have one room with a private bath, one with a semi-private bath and the remaining two share a bath. We provide daily maid service and the accommodations are kept spotless throughout the day. We also offer laundry service for our guests.
Nearby attractions and activities:
Wooden Wheel Lodge offers many alternative activities besides fishing to keep the non-fishing guest occupied. These caves, formed of limestone and marble deposits, are known as Karst systems. The dissolving action of water on this soluble bedrock forms the many caves of the island.
The largest of these caves is the El Capitan Cave. Currently, the U.S. Forest Service operates guided tours and our lodge arranges reservations. The walk to the cave is strenuous with over 370 stairs. There are no improved trails or lighting once inside the cave so hard hats and flashlights are provided.
Cavern Lake Cave is always open to the public and there is a gravel path, which leads to a viewing platform overlooking the entrance. This cave can be viewed only from the exterior, as it is a flow through cave to Cavern Lake and cannot be entered without wading or scuba gear.
