History
In the eighth century B.C., a group of peaceful Greek settlers carved a long, steep staircase into the sheer rock face between the coastline and the higher reaches of the island of Capri. Anacapri – ana meaning above in Greek – was thus born, becoming the Acropolis of the island. To this day, the small town, with its narrow alleyways and dazzling white buildings standing in sharp contrast against the brilliant blue of the sea, preserves its typical Mediterranean architecture.
A large gate and palazzo were later built to protect the only access to the town. Centuries later, Emperor Augustus, entranced by the spectacular beauty of the town, built one of his residences here, filling it with columns, decorative work, the finest marble and artworks. The imperial palace, with its magical views overlooking the Gulf of Naples, was later made even more sumptuous by Tiberius, who extended it beyond the city gate (where the Villa San Michele was built, now housing the Axel Munthe Museum) as far as the site of Capodimonte, on whose promontory, almost two thousand years after the epoch of Augustus, the Capri Palace was reborn.
The Hotel and the Cacace family
The Hotel has its origins in the inn, once located in the center of Anacapri, operated since the 19th century by the Cacace family. In August 1960, the Capri Palace was built at the foot of Mount Solaro, with its magnificent views over the Gulf of Naples and Ischia Island. It immediately became a Mecca for discerning travelers.
Tonino Cacace brought more of his relatives into running the Hotel and, when his father passed away, he inherited the family business at a very young age. With the utmost dedication and following in the footsteps of his father, he dramatically transformed the Hotel. In the space of just a few years, it became the favorite destination of famous personalities from the worlds of the arts, business, and entertainment.
In 2001, after a major restyling that strictly respected the classic Mediterranean design of the building and gave the Hotel the appearance of a noble palace, the Hotel became part of the prestigious The Leading Small Hotels of the World group. With its stone floors, columns, arches, and vaulted ceilings, every element is a reminder of a glorious past that seems to come to life in all its splendor. The travertine baths, the warm tones of the fabrics, and the sumptuous white and gold décor give each room an understated elegance that combines with the feeling of a deliciously warm welcome. Reminiscent of the most beautiful Roman coastal villas, some of the rooms overlook an internal garden with a private swimming pool.
Spa
The ancients didn’t only choose Capri for its striking natural beauty, but also for its refreshingly pure air and its rich health-giving waters. Continuing this tradition, in 1992 the Capri Beauty Farm was established. Today it is one of Europe’s most highly regarded health and beauty centers.
The Capri Beauty Farm’s personalized and state-of-the-art treatments are the product of ongoing medical research. Some of these treatments now have international patents. First and foremost of these is the “Scuola delle Gambe” program, known throughout the world for the excellent results achieved in the prevention and cure of cellulite and vascular problems in the legs.
Professor Francesco Canonaco, health director of the Capri Beauty Farm, has led his dedicated team of highly specialized professionals for many years. In collaboration with Milan State University, he has developed the center’s dietetic-nutritional program. Beginning with an assessment of each person’s basal metabolism using the Indirect Calorimetry method, their calorie intake requirement is measured so as to determine a healthy and individually tailored diet.

Dining
The L’Olivo restaurant, the only restaurant on Capri which boasts a Michelin star, serves Mediterranean cuisine interpreted with great originality by brilliant young chef Oliver Glowig.
But if a quick snack is what you’re looking for, Il Mosaico unquestionably fits the bill. This elegant bistro, located poolside, is decorated throughout with a magnificent mosaic inspired by a famous painting by Lombard artist Velasco entitled La Vela (The sail).
Chef Oliver Glowig
Glowig was born and raised in Germany, where he also trained working at important restaurants in Munich and Bavaria. In 2001 he took on the job of directing the team of 22 cooks at the Capri Palace Hotel, managing in just a few years to win the restaurant a coveted Michelin star.
Discovering Mediterranean cuisine
Chef Glowig offers every guest who wants to discover the secrets of the Mediterranean diet the chance to take part in hands-on cookery lessons. For wine lovers, our expert sommelier also conducts tastings, offering a chance to discover the marvels of the “La Dolce Vite” – the Hotel’s exclusive wine cellar.
Wine cellar
Converted from an ancient tavern where the inhabitants of Anacapri used to congregate in the evenings, the cellar has an impressive wine list of a thousand labels.
Art gallery
Tonino Cacace, a genuine art lover and patron of the arts, has put together an important collection of works by contemporary artists, which can be viewed at different points around the Hotel. He has also established a studio, which attracts young artists from every corner of the world, who draw inspiration from the magnificent natural beauty of the island while enjoying the Hotel’s exquisite hospitality.
Painting at the Capri Palace
The Hotel extends its commitment to the arts by offering guests free lessons in watercolor painting. The courses are conducted by Michele Costantini, a professional illustrator and therapist.

Villa San Michele, Axel Munthe – Located on the northeastern slopes of Anacapri at 327 meters (1,072 feet) above sea level, the villa offers astonishing views over the Gulf of Naples. The site was once occupied by an imperial Roman villa, whose ruins can still be seen in the splendid gardens. San Michele was the residence of Axel Munthe, a Swedish doctor who stayed here between 1896 and 1910. Today the villa is operated by the Axel Munthe Foundation as a museum, which hosts world class cultural and naturalist events.
Punta Carena forts and lighthouse – Built by the English in 1806 and extended by the French after they took Capri, the forts and lighthouse were recently restored to their former glory. Following repairs to the paths, this part of the island is now a highlight of great historical and natural significance. Perched on a rocky promontory with stunning scenery at the island’s westernmost point stands the lighthouse, the second most important lighthouse in Italy with the second strongest light.
Private boat service
The Hotel operates a small number of boats for private transport and trips: two 15 meter (50 foot) Baia 50 motorboats and a fabulous 20 meter (65 foot) sailboat, the South Wind, whose interiors are finished throughout in magnificent teakwood.

In the Capri Palace Hotel vicinity one reaches easily boutiques, shops specializing in local handicrafts and the most famous tourist attractions of the island: Villa San Michele, the museum of Axel Munthe, the chair lift to Monte Solaro, Capri’s highest and most panoramic vantage point, and the charming and appealing village of Anacapri that even before the Emperor Augustus, father of Tiberio, fell in love with it, was the acropolis of the island, settled by the Phoenicians and later by the Greek.
