This 7,000-ace working cattle ranch is a two hour drive from Amarillo, Texas - about 25 miles south of Tucumcari, New Mexico. The 400-ft tall escarpment called the Caprock, which runs through the ranch, separates the Quay Valley from the Llano Estacado, or "staked plains" above. We run 150 Longhorn cows, their calves and bulls, selling natural beef. During the summer months we take in a maximum of 4 guests will help us round them up and take them on to new pastures. Other days we ride through the herd and check on them, check fences etc. After-noons are spent doing other types of ranch work, such as building or fixing fences, putting out salt and mineral for the cattle or whatever else needs tending to. Guests are welcome to participate in whatever we do.
Alternatively, guests may choose to relax at the cozy bunk-house, or take a drive to one of the nearby lakes for a swim or to go fishing. The American Quarter Horse Museum, Billy the Kid Museum and other attractions are within an hour or two’s drive from the ranch.!
Property amenities:
You will stay in a comfortable bunk-house at "cow camp" in the shadow of the Caprock. It is fully equipped and accommodates 4 guests. You will find the the kitchen stocked with breakfast and lunch items you pick from a "food wish list" and then we serve all evening meals at our house.
Nearby attractions and activities:
Ute Lake and Conchas Lake are both within an hour’s drive from the ranch, and offer boating, fishing and swimming. The American Quarter Horse Museum in Amarillo, Texas is well worth a visit, as is Palo Duro Canyon, Texas "grand canyon", south of Amarillo. Billy the Kid Museum in Fort Sumner, NM, is just an hour’s drive from the ranch. Tucumcari Historical Museum has an incredible collection of items donated or loaned from area ranches and citizens. During the summer month you will find rodeos, as well as "Ranch Rodeos" in the area, and the Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso in November attracts people from all over the country.
