White Elephant is a registered birder friendly 'hotspot' in the Pongola Game Reserve - Spot 9.3 on the Zululand Birding Route - Number 9, Phongola, in Northern Zululand.
Birding at White Elephant is both exciting and rewarding. The habitats are diverse, ranging from the Lake Jozini open waters, wetlands and grassland shoreline, bushveld, Lebombo Mountain cliffs and the Hlatikulu forest on the escarpment.
Patrick Thabete, our specialist observer and local birding guide, is always keen to assist and make your birding trip interesting and informative. Subject to weather we offer a variety of birding options, including a guided bushveld walk, game drive, morning and afternoon boat cruise, and a visit to our secret waterhole hide, within short walking distance from White Elephant Safari Lodge.

Package Itinerary:
Day 1 - Depart to White Elephant - Pongola Game Reserve South
Arrive after midday in time for an afternoon guided walk, game drive or boat cruise from the lodge in search of birds and wild animals. After a fragrant sunset and sundowners, return in the evening, to relax and enjoy dinner.
Day 2 - White Elephant
An dusky birdcalls start to depart on a guided birding walk, game drive or boat cruises on lake Jozini, returning later in the morning for brunch. The rest of the day is spent relaxing or birding at the nearby waterhole hide before leaving again for an afternoon's walk or drive extended into the night with the hope of catching a glimpse of the nocturnal birds and animals. Return to lodge for dinner.
Day 3 - White Elephant
Depart in the morning or visit Hlatikulu Forest or Mkhuze Game Reserve for the day. Return late afternoon to the lodge for the third night, before departure the next morning.

Accommodation, dinner, brunch (late breakfast), afternoon teas (high tea), V.A.T. and two of the following birding activities per day - guided walk, game drive or boat cruise departing from the lodge only.
