Nearby attractions and activities:
Mikindani is a small, quiet fishing town, just North of the area’s main town – Mtwara. It is backed by hills of lush vegetation with a skyline broken by the searching branches of baobabs and coconut palms. Walking into the hills provides a chance to experience the stillness of the area and rewards you with a view of the almost enclosed azure bay, which was once a busy harbour full of dhows trading slaves, ivory and copper.
A stroll through Mikindani itself reveals old colonial buildings giving the town a gentle grandeur, their open balconies overlook the street, and doorways are surrounded by Zanzibar-style carvings. Mikindani’s claim to fame is that in 1866 David Livingstone stayed here for a fortnight before embarking on his fated third and final expedition to discover to the source of the Nile, from which only his heart returned - in a wooden box.
Location:
Flights to Mtwara from Dar es Saalam leave daily with Precision Air or Air Tanzania. Pickups can be arranged on request. By road, Mikindani is an hour South of Lindi with Mtwara a further 12 km.
