Set at 1.7 miles south of Arenal Volcano, Arenal Observatory Lodge (AOL) offers front-row seating for one of the world´s most thrilling fireworks display- a volcanic eruption. Arenal Volcano, which lay dormant for centuries, erupted in 1968 and has been continuously active ever since, making it one of the world´s most explosive cones. AOL was originally built in 1987 as a research station for scientists from the Smithsonian Institute.
The lodge crowns a ridge top overlooking Lake Arenal- the largest fresh water lake in Costa Rica, and a popular place for sport fishing. AOL lies in the heart of some Costa Rica’s most abundant natural areas, a private nature reserve- the only lodge within the Arenal National Park- the rich volcanic soil supports primary and secondary rainforest-alive with birds, butterflies, mammals and reptiles.
