The Dhaulagiri is the highest mountain that is completely inside the Nepal boundary. This giant peak is also the highest residual mountain of the world, the only of its kind in the Himalayas (fold mountains). As oppose to its neighboring peak, Annapurna, trekkers seldom attempt to travel to this side of the deepest gorge of the world. The gorge over 6,000 m (20,000 ft) deep is in fact the valley between this giant in the west and Annapurna in the east. Dhaulagiri is perhaps the largest mountain in base diameter at the base camp.

We begin the trek at the lowlands of Baglung inhabited by the Brahmins and Chhetries. Gradually as we gain altitude we come across the Gurung and Magar Tribes. Beginning from Sal and Pristine Pine forest, the trail foes to barren lands from where we embark on mountain experience with the exquisite Dhaulagiri in front of us. We cross the French Pass and then the Dhampus Pass which offers the breath-taking view of the Dhaulagiri Range, the Annapurna Range, Nilgiri and a look at the deepeest gorge in the world, the Kaligandaki gorge. We finish the trek at Jomsom.

Following the rivers upstream, ferns and forests of oak and other deciduous trees and juniper are interesting. Mountain sides of rhododendron blaze with colour in the spring, and other flowers are abundant on the trail. Even on high mountain passes above the tree line, tiny alpine flowers can be found dotting the wind swept ground. The vast massif screens the hidden land of Dolpa to its north and to the west of Dhaulagiri are Nepal’s western hills. This is also an opportunity to experience the Tibetan Buddhist culture that is through out the Himalaya.
