Arrive from Iceland, Scotland, England, Norway or Denmark on direct flight to the Faroe Islands. This is truly a birdlowers delight, where you walk and sail among litteraly hundreds of thousands of birds, like puffins, guillemots, great skuas, oystercatchers, storm petrels etc. This tour gets you realy close to the birds to observe and enjoy, along with coachrides to viewpoints and historical sights, like viking settlements excavations, ruins, old farmhouses and museums.

Lonely Planet says:

"Shining like green stones on a grey back cloth, the 18 islands in the Faroes group are undeniably beautiful in a North Atlantic, buffeted-by-gales and tossed-by-sea kind of way. They are one of those remote places that most people would have trouble spotting on a map, and they get little press. Even Europeans, who are right on their doorstep, generally have few clues about them. Yet they aren't that far away if you're in Europe, and some of the most spectacular parts lie within easy reach of the capital, Tórshavn.

The seaside cliffs are teeming with birds, which is enough to pull many visitors. The hiking is magnificent and varied, from craggy headlands with wild surf to desolate moorlands, from cascading waterfalls to snowcapped peaks. The ground is daubed with white and yellow where hardy wildflowers bloom for a season, and flocks of sheep scatter maniacally as you pass. Visit in the summer, when the days are long and the weather, while certainly not Waikiki, is passable. After all, a hundred thousand nesting birds can't be wrong."

Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival:

Arrive in the Faroe Islands Vagar Airport, and our coach will take you to the ferry that crosses over to Mykines island, where you will spend the night. The inflight to Vagar and the sailing trip to Mykines offer spectacular scenic beauty.

Suggestions for the evening:

It's worthwhile climbing to the island's summit, the 560m (1837ft) Knúkur, for the fantastic views, or visiting Steinskógurin ('the stone forest') near the northern coast at Korkadalur. East of Knúkur, the terrain becomes precipitous and the walk to the eastern end of the island is treacherous.

Day 2:
Mykines:

Mykines Village is Mykines Island's single village, and it is a beautiful little place with bright houses with turf roofs. With only 18 inhabitants there's not a great deal to see, but the countryside around is ideal for walking. Lundaland ('the land of puffins') is on Mykineshólmur, an islet connected to the main island by a footbridge over a 24m (115ft) deep gorge called Hólmgjógv. The walk is one of the best in the Faroes, with magnificent scenery and some of the world's densest bird colonies.

Packed lunch is served on the tour.

After the hike, we sail back to Vagar ísland, where we stop for dinner at the Airport Hotel, before continuing on a sailing excursion to the Vestmanna Birdcliffs, where the boat takes us in to caves and under the towering birdcliffs that are great rock walls up to over 500 meters high.

The boat will sail us all the way to the village Eidi, where the group checks in to Hotel Eidi.

Day 3:
After breakfast we drive around Mt. Slættaratindur to Gjógv and Funning and further on to Saksun and Dúvugarðar homestead. After Saksun we continue to the old whaling station “við Áir” and to the church in Kollafjørður. If it is clear on the mountain tops, we will drive via the mountain road to Tórshavn, and make a short stop enroute at viewpoint Sornfelli (749m). In Tórshavn we will have lunch at FK cafeteria before visiting the national museum. After the national museum, we go back to FK to do some initial shopping in the supermarket (groceries are not incl.in the offer), as the house in Skopun is on “self cook” basis. After the shopping, we drive to the viewpoints around Tórshavn and to the Nordic House. It is possible to buy coffee/tea in the Nordic House. After the Nordic House, we drive to Gamlarætt and take the ferry across to Skopun, where we check in to a summer house (large house). The rest of the evening is at own disposal, but I can recommend a walk in the area north of Skopun.

Day 4:
At 10:00 the guide meets the group at the house, and they start the hike towards Sandur through Høvdahagi on the western side of Sandoy. This is a fabulous scenery tour and birdlife in abundance. Packed lunch will be eaten enroute. In the deserted village of Søltuvík, we will make a short stop to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the place with a cup of coffee/tea. From here we continue along lake Gróthúsvatn to the village of Sandur.

A couple of hours on own hand in Sandur, where they can visit the village museum, the church, the sand dunes, Traðir farms, or the hotel Ísansgardur for refreshments. The group will be taken back to Skopun by bus, exact time can be arranged “on the fly” ** If we have perfect sailing weather this day, we will switch the thursday and friday programmes.

Day 5:
At 09:30 the bus picks up the group at the house, and drives to Sandur harbour, where we embark the excursion boat ”Hvíthamar” that will take us sailing around Skúvoy and Dímun. These two islands have the richest birdlife in the Faroe Islands, even more birds than Mykines, and the boat sails right beneath the birdcliffs. Packed lunch will be eaten somewhere beneath the birdcliffs of Skúvoy or Dímun. Back in Sandur, we go by bus to Húsavík and Dalur and to Skálavík. In Skálavík we walk along the shore to Villingaurd (Skálhøvdi) to enjoy some more spectaculare scenery and the puffin colonies. The walk takes only 10 minutes from Skálavík and is easy. The view towards the northern islands is also very beautyful from here. Late in the afternoon the group will be back in Skopun. The rest of the evening is at own disposal. ** In case of too bad weather to sail around the islands, we offer an alternative tour by ferry to Skúvoy and a hike to Fagradal. Here is very good view towards the birdcliffs and good opportunity to enjoy the birdlife. Skúvoy village is also worth a visit. One speciality is the puffin colony by the harbour (50 m. from the houses), another is the grave of Sigmundur Brestisson, national hero that braught christianity to the Faroes around year 1000

Day 6:
At 09:25 we depart Skopun for Gamlarætt. From here by bus to Kirkjubø and further on to Tórshavn to drop off some luggage at Hotel Tórshavn. The day is at own disposal. At 18:00 the ferry departs for Nólsoy, where the group will be met by ornithologist Jens Kjeld Jensen, who will follow the group to Kaffistovan B&B. The next few hours are on own hand, and I can suggest a visit to Brunnhús, the oldest house in Nólsoy and possibly a stroll around the village, or just take a nap in their rooms at the Kaffistovan B&B. Approximately 1 hour before sunset, Jens Kjeld Jensen will meet the group at Kaffistovan, and take them on a 1 hour hike, to what is believed to be the worlds largest colony of Storm Petrels. Here they can observe these mysterious nightbirds for the next 1-11/2 hours. At the same time, it will be possible to see a range of other birds aswell, like puffins etc. Coffee/Tea is served when the group returns to Nólsoy. Accommodation is at Kaffistovan B&B

Day 7:
The morning is at own disposal. Lunch will be served at Hotel Tórshavn, and after lunch, the group will have the opportunity to go on an optional excursion in the old part of Tórshavn, Tinganes and Skansin. The evening is at own disposal.
