Ghana is almost synonymous with West Africa. It has a vibrant cultural scene, historic coastal slave forts, interesting little villages, fantastic craft production and some good wildlife viewing. Begin your journey with a tour of Accra including the Dubois Memorial Center for Pan-African Culture, local markets, art galleries and the famous coffin makers of Teshie (who will make you a coffin looking like anything from a giant beer bottle to an old ship). Next head to the Coastal Forts of Elmina and Cape Coast to explore their dark history as part of the slave trade. You will take time to visit Posuban shrines, learn about Asafo culture and visit Kakum National Park for the "canopy walkway" suspended over 350 meters above the tropical rainforest. Kumasi, the ancient capital of the Ashanti Empire, is your next major stop but you will also detour to Mesomagor village to listen and interact with the musicians of a local bamboo orchestra. In Kumasi, you will tour the museums, Manhyia Palace, Asanthehen palace, as well as local fabric producers. The following day is spent exploring the craft villages of Ahwiaa, Ntonso and Bonwire, famous for their woodcarving, Adrinka cloth and Kente cloth. Finally, before returning to the coast, visit a local monkey sanctuary and the Owabi bird sanctuary. You will have one final day in Accra to relax before heading home.
