Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrive in Columbus at your hotel - a Victorian Landmark property. Then tour one of America's oldest statehouses in continual use. Frank Lloyd Wright called the 1857 Greek Revival Columbus Statehouse "the most honest of state capitols." Also tour Columbus' "German Village," an 1800s neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. Enjoy a welcome dinner and, afterward, a slide lecture preview of the "Grandma Moses in the 21st Century" exhibition.

Day 2:
After breakfast, tour "Grandma Moses in the 21st Century," an exhibition of 87 of the most important works by Anna Mary Robertson "Grandma" Moses from public and private collections in the U.S. and Japan on tour in Columbus. The exhibit examines Moses' artistic development; her place at the center of folk art, fine art, and popular culture; and the phenomenon of her success. Moses, a farmer and homemaker who became one of the most respected folk artists of the pre-World War II period, was also one of the first artists to become a media superstar. When Moses died in 1961 at the age of 101, she had completed over 1600 works in a 20-year career. Also in town is "The Quilted Surface," an exhibit of contemporary art quilts made by attendees of the Quilt Surface Design Symposium, the world's best quality art quilt and surface design classes since 1990. Also tour the permanent collection of the Columbus Museum of Art. The Columbus Museum of Art, one of the finest art museums in the Midwest, features an outstanding collection of impressionists, German expressionists, cubists, American modernists, and contemporary art, including works by Degas, Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Bellows, Hopper, Marin and O'Keeffe. Enjoy dinner this evening after your visit to the museum.

Day 3:
After breakfast, take a private tour of the Kelton House and Garden. The Kelton House and Garden was built in 1852 by Fernando Cortez Kelton, a prosperous wholesaler of dry goods and pharmaceuticals. Today, this historic house also functions as a living museum of 19th century life. It is a treasure trove of Victoriana, containing everything from lavishly embellished Victorian silverware to unusual items such as a woven-hair brooch worn by Mrs. Sophia Kelton. Then, travel by coach to Dayton, Ohio to visit the Dayton Art Institute. Another excellent Midwest collection of art, the Dayton Art Institute's collection covers a comprehensive field of art history and also features two installations of Medieval Cloisters. Enjoy dinner in Dayton, Ohio before our return trip back to Columbus.

Day 4:
After breakfast, take a private tour of the James Thurber house. James Thurber was an American author and cartoonist. Two of his best known works are "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "The Thurber Carnival." His humorous drawings, short tales and essays poke gentle fun at the lives and folly of men and women. We'll tour this historic house and view one of the rotating exhibitions on display of the work of Thurber and/or his peers. Afterwards, you will have time on your own in Columbus. If you like, you can take this opportunity to visit the new Jack Nicklaus museum that is scheduled to in Columbus in May 2002.
