This is a trip for somebody who always wanted to learn about the life of the famous Huskies. In this active week you learn a lot about raising and training sled dogs. They are true athletes. We will do daily training rides with our teams on a stripped down car chassis or a 4 wheeler, preferably in the evening if it is warm. This week gives you a broad knowledge for a future winter mushing vacation...

Your Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival on the Whitehorse airport. You will be picked up from us by van and we make a tour through Whitehorse. Visit of the Beringia Museum and transfer to the Blue Kennels base camp, 50 km along the Alaska Highway. The dogs are anxiously waiting to give you a warm welcome, they will be all over you, bring old clothes. You will move in your guest log cabin. In the evening feeding of 70 Huskies and preparations to start with 18 to 22 dogs on the training cart. A burst of power and we fly down the trail. Included: (L), (D).

Day 2: Preparations and help with taking care of the dogs in the morning. Every dog wants to be greeted separately. Practical explanation in the function of a kennel and the importance of social structures. You can pick 6 dogs, they will be in your team which you will be taking out by yourself. Again in the evening we hook up a different team for a training run. During the daytime we rotate different dogs in our big fenced in free run, so that they can play and socialize by themselves. Nightly BBQ. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: This morning you will be in charge of feeding the dogs under our guidance. Water is their most important food component, we water the dogs 3 times a day. Your big adventure will start as you will harness up your 6 dogs and hook them to the 4 wheeler. One of us will be traveling with you and give you assistance and advice during the run. After the run theoretical explanations about the experience. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: Puppy Day! As a future musher it is important to spend as much time as possible with the youngsters. We take them for a hike, accompanied by an adult dog as a teacher. Dogs learn more from their own breed than they ever learn from us. This night you can spend together with your 6 dogs in the free run, a real dog night. In the evening we take the teams out again. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: Theoretical and practical training on first aid and daily care on sled dogs. We show you the different types of sled used during the winter and demonstrate you how to fix them. Dogs love to swim. We will load a pack of dogs in the truck and drive with a canoe on top to the Takhini River. We head out for an unusual paddle trip, accompanied by our dogs. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: Depending on the temperature we head out for a training ride in the morning, or if possible a bike ride. This is a good way to teach the young dogs the commands. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 7: You learn how to manufacture your own gangline to hook up the dogs. A last run with your team and it is time to say good bye to your new friends. You will be hooked for life! Transfer to a downtown hotel. Included: (B), (L).

Day 8: Southbound flight or even better, you continue with another program offered.
