Adventure sailing trips around Burma’s Mergui Archipelago.
The Mergui Archipelago comprises hundreds of islands and stretches some 200 miles from the southern most tip of Myanmar (Burma) border with Thailand. It is one of the most beautiful and untouched areas in the world and is only accessible by sailboat. These are the islands you'll never find in any travel agents' window... some 800 of them, almost all uninhabited, covered in rainforest and fringed by white sandy beaches. Most are surrounded by pristine coral reefs and all are lapped by the warm turquoise Andaman Sea. They are preserved in the truest sense, boasting a variety of wildlife including monkeys, wild boar and even Elephants!!!! Bird life is prolific, with over 50 species including Hornbills, Egrets, Kites and Fish Eagles.
The area has some world class Snorkeling and Scuba Diving and is perfect for those who want to ‘have a go’. The ancient mangroves that line the rivers and inlets on Lampi Island provide a great opportunity for exploring with Sea Kayaks. The sailing is easy, gentle cruisin'... a lazy 15 knots or so of wind most of the time; that means flat calm water and definitely no seasickness! The area is truly all the things that the postcards promise. If you could paint a picture of paradise, the islands of Mergui Archipelago would be it!!!
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Kawthung - Barwell Island. Transfer by long-tail from Ranong (Thailand) to Kawthung (Burma) arriving on Stressbreaker around lunchtime. Once all the paperwork is sorted, we sail to Barwell Island for an evening arrival. (L)/(D)
Day 2: Barwell Island - Mid Islands. After exploring the island we sail north to the 3 islands that make up the Mid group. Wonderful beaches and great snorkeling in this idyllic anchorage and your first opportunity to see the White Bellied Sea Eagles and Bryonomy Kits that circle the skies. (B)/(L)/(D)
Day 3: Mid Islands - Lampi NP. A short journey today to Lampi National Park. First stop is the Sea Gypsy village on Pu Nala. In the afternoon, we explore one of the mangrove rivers on the west side of Lampi Island. Plenty of wildlife and huge, century-old mangrove trees towering overhead. (B)/(L)/(D)
Day 4: Lampi NP - Great Swinton. Today we set sail for Great Swinton Island. Several kilometers of white sand beach, beautifully clear warm water and the most pristine coral you have ever seen. Ideal for those that want to “have a go” at Scuba Diving. Or for the more experienced, just offshore, there is the world class dive site of Shark Cave!!! (B)/(L)/(D)
Day 5: Great Swinton - Mcloud Island. After we leave Great Swinton we sail south, passing dozens of deserted tropical islands before arriving at Mcloud Island. Another beautiful island covered in rainforest and some great snorkeling. Here we have an opportunity to explore the rainforest and perhaps even see the illusive Rhinoceros Hornbill. (B)/(L)/(D)
Day 6: Mcloud Island - Horseshoe Island. Today we travel to the “jewel in the crown” of the Mergui Archipelago. As the name suggests, this island in horseshoe shaped with a lagoon in the middle making it the most idyllic anchorage. Being shallow, with crystal clear water and a white sand bottom, the whole lagoon appears like a giant fish tank. (B)/(L)/(D)
Day 7: Horseshoe Island - Kawthung. This morning, we take the inflatable to the nearby island of Copula. The whole inside of the island is a giant cave, which can only be entered by dingy at low tide. The cave is home to a small number of people who live in a stilted village above the water. These people spend their life in the half-light collecting bird’s nests for the soup!!!! After lunch we depart for an evening arrival in Kawthung. (B)/(L)/(D)
Day 8: Kawthung. Leave Stressbreaker about 8.00am for the long-tail crossing back to Ranong (Thailand) for your onward journey. (B)
