Join our exciting Mount Kharkhiraa trek and experience Mongolia's fascinating nomadic culture as we trek for 8 days in the remote north western corner of the country. The mountainous landscape is dramatic, with snowy peaks, glaciers, turquoise lakes and fast flowing rivers. We use camels and pack horses to carry our equipment, just as the local people do, and our local guides are good fun and always delighted to show us their beautiful country.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to hotel near to the central Sukhbaatar Square.
Day 2: Take the two and a half hour flight to Ulaangom in Uvs province. Jeep to start of trek. Meet local staff and camels and start hiking. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 3: Trek up to a pass from where there is a lovely view of the Blue Lake. Hike down and around the lake and over 3 low passes to reach the Kharkhiraa river. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 4: Trek past several ancient graves and standing stones. Follow the Kharkhiraa river and camp facing big red cliffs. (B) (L) (D)
Day 5: Climbing gradually, reach the base of Kharkhiraa pass and camp surrounded by big snow covered mountains. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 6: Climb 400m steeply up to the pass, then cross the high open plateau, with views of several glaciers and peaks. Camp beside a beautiful turquoise lake. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 7: Hike up to Yamaatiin Pass, highest point of the trek, followed by a very dramatic downhill climb into the valley. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 8: Trek down this wonderful valley whose flora and remarkable geological formations are in complete contrast to landscape seen previously. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 9: Hike to a small Kazakh mining town where we meet our driver and drive down to Uureg Lake, known for its abundant bird life. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 10: Jeep back to Ulaangom. Enjoy the shops and bars in the town. Includes: (B).
Day 11: Fly to Ulaanbaatar. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 12: Free day in Ulaanbaatar. Includes: (B).
Day 13: Depart. Includes: (B).
