The Mountain Tour highlights the most rugged mountainous regions accessible by road in Alaska including Denali National Park, the Denali Highway, Tangle Lakes, Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Valdez, and Prince William Sound.

This trip is the off the beaten path equivalent of our Glacier Tour for people with a little more time. Highlights of this trip include Denali National Park (a full day park tour is included in tour cost) and the picturesque Denali Highway along the south side of the Alaska Range. The ghost towns of Wrangell St. Elias National Park and the scenery in Valdez are both extraordinary.

A scenic ferry tour across Prince William Sound caps this wonderful journey. Great hiking opportunities can be found at each location as well as additional day trip adventures.

Additional optional adventure trips include river rafting, flight seeing, horseback riding, Mt. biking, canoeing, glacier trekking, ice climbing, glacier/wildlife cruises, fishing, and helicopter tours.

Your Itinerary

Day 1:
We’ll depart Anchorage in the morning and arrive in Talkeetna a few hours later. Talkeetna sits at the confluence of three rivers in the shadow of the Alaska Range. Mt. Denali (20,320 ft.), Mt Foraker (17,400 ft.) and Mt. Hunter (14,573 ft.) are all visible from several vistas near town.

Later we’ll continue north, over Broad Pass and our first taste of the treeless north. On the north side of Alaska Range we’ll meet up with the Nenana River which will lead us to Denali National Park.

This evening we’ll have time to explore the park entrance, visit the Denali National Park Visitor Center and/or go on a short hike.

Day 2:
Denali National Park. We’ll spend two full days exploring the Denali region.

One day is set aside for a wildlife bus tour into the heart of the park (included in tour cost). Keep your camera ready as you search for bears, moose, wolves, caribou, Dall sheep, arctic fox, and if your lucky, tremendous views of North America’s largest mountain Mt. McKinley (Denali).

The other day is set aside for optional activities: hiking, river rafting, flight seeing, horseback riding, Mt. biking, river kayaking and sled dog kennel tours.

Day 4:
Today we travel the 120-mile unpaved Denali Highway along the south side of the Alaska Range to Tangle Lakes. Many Alaskans consider this to be one of the most beautiful drives in the state. We’ll look for wildlife and stop along the way for short hikes to explore the treeless tundra. This afternoon we can go for a hike or an evening canoe on Tangle Lake.
(B) (L)

Day 5:
Tangle Lakes and vicinity. The Tangle lakes region is a vast, treeless (mostly) expanse dotted with numerous lakes. Evidence of glacial activity can be seen everywhere. We’ll have a full day to explore the tundra on a hike and/or canoe on Tangle Lake.
(B) (L) (D)

Day 6:
Scenic drive to Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Our destination within the park is McCarthy, near the Kennecott copper mines. En route we’ll stop along the famous Alaska Pipeline, cross the mighty Copper River and travel the old railway path to McCarthy.

We’ll camp at the end of the unpaved McCarthy Road near the Kennicott River. A short walk across a footbridge brings us into McCarthy and, 4 miles up the hill (shuttle services available), the old town of Kennicott. The turn of the century architecture of the copper mills in Kennicott is impressive even by today’s standards.

Day 7:
Wrangell St. Elias National Park. A full day to explore the park.

Recreational activities include glacier hiking, ice climbing, flight seeing, fly-out mountain biking, river rafting, great day hikes and historic mine tours.

Day 8:
Scenic drive to Valdez. En route we’ll stop for a hike at the road accessible Worthington glacier. Later, we’ll cross scenic Thompson Pass and arrive in Valdez in time to explore the harbor.
(B) (L) (D)

Day 9:
Valdez is located at the base of the towering Chugach Mountains on the shores of Prince William Sound and is often referred to as the “Little Switzerland” of Alaska.

Recreational opportunities include sea kayaking, river rafting, helicopter tours, glacier/wildlife cruises and fishing.
(B) (L) (D)

Day 10:
Ferry across Prince William Sound to Anchorage. We’ll look for wildlife and enjoy magnificent glacial scenery as we travel the Alaska State Ferry back to Anchorage.
