Despite what you may have heard, the Midwest United States does have it's secret gems, and the 42,000 acre Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is unquestionably one of them. The park is situated just north of Bayfield, Wisconsin. A 7-9 hour drive from Chicago, Illinois. The Apostle Islands is certainly one of the most beautiful destinations in all of the Midwest. With miles of rocky forested coastline, you'll feel as if you just set out on a trip in coastal Maine.
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore houses 22 islands, 21 of which are remote, densely forested, uninhabited wilderness. In addition, the park boasts one of the highest density of black bears and the most lighthouses in the entire U.S. National Park system. More importantly though, the Apostle Islands offers an outstanding location as it is an accessible, beautiful wilderness that can be comfortably explored by the beginning and intermediate sea kayaker.
Before setting out, we will first cover and practice basic sea kayaking skills off of the mainland, and then we'll take your new skills and explore the pristine waters and islands of southern Lake Superior. The water is quite cool at this time of the year so you'll want to wear appropriate clothing for the kayaking portion.
We provide the camping gear, food, cooks, guides, sea kayaking equipment, and instruction. All you will need is a your clothes and 5 free days!
