Despite what you may have heard, the Midwest United States does have it's secret gems, and the big, blue lake found right at our doorstep is one of them. The 12th Street beach is situated right between the Planetarium and Meigs field, about an hour drive from Chicago's western suburbs. The Chicago skyline and river provide for one of the most beautiful sea kayaking day trips in the lower Midwest. With sandy coastline and miles of dramatic towering skyscrapers, you'll get a surreal feeling as you glide effortlessly along the shoreline as the rest of Chicago sits in bumper to bumper traffic.
This location is ideal for this group as it offers an accessible, beautiful, "urban wilderness" that can be comfortably explored by the beginning and intermediate sea kayaker. Before setting out, we will first cover and practice basic sea kayaking skills and safety manuevers while near the beach, then we'll take your new skills and explore the cool waters of Lake Michigan (exact route is determined by weather and wave conditions). Please bring a swimsuit or clothes that can get wet, as we will be conducting some basic practice maneuvers in the water.
This trip is being conducted at the day rate of $67 per person (includes lunch).
Directions to launch site: From Lake Shore Drive take the exit for Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, and the Field Museum. The 12th Street beach is located between the Planetarium and Meigs Field. Pay lots and metered spaces will allow you to park for the day.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
8:30 a.m. Meet in Chicago at the 12th Street Beach
8:30--11:00 a.m: Unload trailer; beginning sea kayak instructional
11:00--11:45 a.m.: Lunch (provided by First Light Expeditions)
11:45--3:00 p.m.: Kayak the Chicago lakefront and skyline
3:00--3:30 p.m.: Load the kayaks on the trailer, head home!
