The float plane lands on Surprise Lake, inside the extinct volcano which is Aniakchak Cauldera National Monument. This stark, cinder covered land looks like a moonscape. Our rafts pass through “the Gates” and some rapids before the current slows and we meander through the brushy lowlands which teem with wildlife. Moose, Brown Bear, fox, wolves, bald eagles and many other birds are likely sights. Whales, sea lions, seals, otters, and sea birds abound in the bay where our trip ends. Once again, the fishing is very good. 2004 start dates: June 21, July 16, 9 days, $3790.
