Live Mongolia the way the locals do! By exploring Mongolia on horseback, enjoy not only the sport of trekking on Mongolian horses, but experience a unique sense of unity with local herders and the surrounding nature. Visit the many herders' families on the way and experience their hospitality. Drink a milk tea with them, try the local barbecue and get a glimpse of the traditional way of living of remote families. Those unbelievable journeys on Mongolian horses offer the riders unique contacts with the local people who will honour foreigners exploring their country the way they live it. Well-organised logistical supports make our horseback expeditions accessible to most but a basic knowledge of horseback riding is preferable.

Tour Itinerary:

Days 1 - 2: Upon arrival at the airport we will be welcomed by our guide. He will bring us to our comfortable, centrally located hotel. In the afternoon we will stroll around Ulaanbaatar. We will visit the Natural and the Historical Museums. We will stop at the Gandantegchinlen Monastery. It is the largest and most important monastery of Mongolia. We will scroll through the different monasteries and see the magnificent statue of Migjid Janraisig, an 82-food high statue gilded in gold and covered with silk cloths. We will have dinner at a local restaurant. (Hotel, L, D)

Day 3: After breakfast we will head for Kharkhorin (also called Karakorum), site of the 13th century capital of the Mongolian Empire created by Chinggis Khaan. Very little is left from this legendary city. In the 16th century, Mongolia's biggest Monastery was build from the ruins of Kharkhorin. Now Erdene Zuu Monastery are the remains of what once was a huge monastery of 100 temples and about 1.000 lamas residencing there.

We will explore the grounds of Erdene Zuu Monastery surrounded by its massive 400 m X 400 m walls. We will be guided around the 3 remaining temples: Dalai Lama, Zuu of Buddha and Lavrin Temple. We will also see the Turtle Rock and the Phallic Rock. After having visited the area we will set off further westwards. In the evening we will meet our horsemen and our horses. Being 1.40 meter high the horses are often taken by Europeans as ponies. Their height is deceiving; they are renowned for their strength, speed and dexterity. We will put up our camp next to the wranglers' family ger. Our guide - translator will help us to forge contact with the local population. (Tented Camp, B, L, D)

Day 4: Today we will set off for a nine-day horseback riding trip in the mountainous area of the Khangai. Here we will leave our vehicles and load our gear and food on pack horses. The horsemen will be responsible for the horses and, being from the region, they will be our guides. On the way we will visit many gers and experience the nomadic life of Central Asia. Our translator will help us to forge contact with the local population. We will start our horseback riding expedition from close to Burd village. We will ride the Jarantai River stream upwards. This river flows through one of the open fertile valleys of central Mongolia. The region is called the "Mongolian Switzerland" for its beautiful nature. It offers a rare combination of grasslands, mountains, forests and rivers. Later we ride through the Oliin Davaa Pass and its forested area. En Route we will pass by many nomad families. (Tented Camp, B, L, D)

Days 5 - 12: Riding in the Khangai Region. (B) (L) (D)

Days 13 - 14: After a good rest will drive to Khogno Khan Mountains. Khogno Khan Mountains is an impressive massif in the open steppes. Not far from here runs the Tasarkhai Els, a 100 km long sand dune. End the afternoon we will hike in the region of Khogno Khan Mountains, walk up the mountain and enjoy the incredible view over the plains, the sand dune and grasslands. We will also visit the nice little Uvgun Monastery. (Ger Camp, B, L, D).

Day 15: After breakfast, transfer to the airport for departure. (B)
