One of our principles in bicycle touring is home based touring approach. This time we also decided to stick to it. You will not lose anything from cycling program but you will gain more relaxing atmosphere and your stay in Umbria will be more pleasurable. You will not have to pack and repack every day. After few days your hotel will be as your home. Every day we will ride loop tours of approximately 50 km. Some days start directly from hotel, others involve a short trip in a car to reach a suitable starting point. We will ride mostly on small country roads.
WHAT WILL YOU SEE
There are many epithets connected to Umbria such as "Green heart of Italy", land of the saints, astonished nature beauty and region of traditional good wine and kitchen. It lays on slopes of Apennines mountains and it is generally hilly. Two main rivers passes through this region - Tiber and Nera. Umbria is famous for its monasteries, churches, tiny villages, local food markets, truffles, wine, ceramics and hospitable people.
Assisi - this medieval town is widely known as the home of Saint Francis of Assisi who founded the Franciscan religious order. This town will enchanted you with its old houses with balconies overflowing with flowers line narrow, cobbled streets full of arches and steps. Other important sites in Assisi include the Gothic Basilica di Santa Chiara and San Rufino, a Romanesque cathedral noted for its handsome facade and Piazza del Comune - the famous Roman temple of Minerva. But Assisi is just one of Umbrian's pearls. Our itinerary will take us to Bevagna - for many people one of the most beautiful towns in Umbria.
Torgiano is one of our stops where some of the finest Umbrian's wine is producing. There you can find all information about Umbrian's wine in wine museum. Neighboring town Deruta is famous for its hand-painted ceramics. As a gift to climb up to Montefalco you will get fantastic panorama of surrounding countryside. This small village is also named "Balcony of Umbria". Old Roman town Foligno will impress you with its Piazza della Republica and a 12th century cathedral. Todi is distinguished by Romanesque churches, narrow cobblestone lanes (in the medieval and Renaissance heart of the town), and dramatic views. Its main square is said to be the most beautiful in Italy. From the walls of the Castiglione’s castle is the best view over the lake Trasimeno . Lago Trasimeno is one of the largest lakes in Italy and favorite stop for many migrating birds. Named by the ancient Romans, it was the scene of a great victory of the Carthaginian general Hannibal in 217 BC.
And do not miss Perugia - one of the oldest cities in Italy. Perugia has medieval and Renaissance structures, including the circular Church of Sant’Angelo (5th century), the 10th-century Church of San Pietro (with a notable art collection) and the 15th-century Oratory of San Bernardino. If you are fan of chocolate Perugia is right place for you. Local chocolate is delicious and a great favorite here.
