The Aberdares Walking Expeditions - the highest peak on the Range is Ol Doinyo Lesatima which stands at 4000m (13,120ft.) making the Aberdares the third highest mountains in Kenya after Mount Kenya (5199m) & Mt. Elgon (4321m). A hike to Satima Peak offers great sight seeing opportunities. It combines views of the most magnificent section of the Great Rift Valley to the west with the awe-inspiring horizon view of the majestic Mount Kenya 40 kms to the west. The ranges encompasses a large area of forest known as the Salient where larger animals are concentrated and where game viewing is done. The area in which trekking is done is above the Salient across the extensive moorland and giant heather zones of the mountain.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Transferred from Nairobi to the base hotel in the morning to arrive for lunch followed by an afternoon nature walk in the Mount Kenya forest that assists you with the much needed acclimatization in Aberdare. If time permits, have an acclimatization hike to the famous mau mau caves, where the Kenyan freedom fighters stage their freedom struggle. Overnight in the hotel. (L) / (D)

Day 2: Transfer early for Aberdare National Park via the park headquarter to pick a ranger and then enter the park through Tree top Gate for game viewing and a short walk visit to the scenic waterfalls enroute to Reedbuck campsite for overnight. (B) / (L) / (D)

Day 3: After breakfast, start a 5-6 hours hike through a track dotted with giant heather, tussock grass, open forest glades and rose wood to arrive at Honi river for overnight in tents. The hike offers opportunities to encounter with buffaloes, elephant and many antelopes. Picnic lunch is served enroute. (B) / (L) / (D)

Day 4: Have breakfast and hike for 5-6 hours through forest and lastly moorland on the way up the Road head, then to the mouth of Honi river for overnight in tents. The dayıs hike offers adequate acclimatisation in preparation for the following day peak attempt. (B) / (L) / (D)

Day 5: Hike up the Satima peak (4001m) taking 2 - 3 hour to arrive in time for an African dawn. On clear day there is opportunities to observe Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro on the horizon and even the surrounding vicinity of Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and the Daiga hills. Descent back to the roadhead or Wandare / Ruhuruini junction as dictated by prevailing road conditions to connect with a transfer vehicle for onward transfer back to Our base hotel for a nice hot shower and a late lunch.
