Retrace the footsteps and paddle strokes of Lewis and Clark during the bicentennial of their 1804-1806 expedition. Canoe the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River. Experience the power of the Great Falls and appreciate the 18-mile portage that delayed the Expedition for a month. Explore an ancient bison cliff jump and discover Blackfeet Indian tepee rings as we hike and ride horseback in the Rocky Mountain Front.
Inn & Camping Highlights: Relax in the serenity and beauty of the Deep Canyon Guest Ranch in the Rocky Mountain Front and soak in the history of the Grand Union Hotel on the bank of the Missouri River. Sleep on padded cots in walk-in tents at Eagle Creek and Slaughter River as we canoe down the Missouri River.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Lewis and Clark Center and Ulm Pishkun
Begin with an introduction to the Expedition through film, dioramas and interactive displays at the interpretive museum. Experience the waterfalls and springs first documented by Lewis and Clark. Look for Blackfeet tepee rings as we hike to the largest bison jump in North America. (L/D).
Days 2-3: Rocky Mountains and Great Falls
From our base at a lovely western guest ranch in the Rocky Mountain Front, horseback ride and hike along mountain streams, through wildflower-carpeted meadows and to points of distant vistas. Witness the power of the Great Falls and listen to a spellbinding historian in the river town of Fort Benton. (B/L/D).
Days 4-6: Upper Missouri River
Canoe 47 miles of the last free-flowing stretch of river that has changed little since the Corps of Discovery navigated it two centuries ago. Paddle beneath sandstone cliffs and past igneous intrusions. Hike to Hole-in-the-Wall for great views of the river below. Keep an eye out for elk, white-tailed deer, muskrats, bald eagles and pelicans as we float the gentle waters of the Missouri. Camp at the very same sites where Lewis and Clark slept on their epic journey. (B/L/D).
