Day 1 Arrive Maun, Botswana • Jacks or San Camp
Depart Maun via small aircraft, which service the camp airstrip. The scenic flight takes about 1 hour. Upon arrival, you will be met by your guide and safari vehicle and transferred to the camp for a briefing. After you have had time to get settled, meet your guide for afternoon tea and head out for a game drive. Return in time for a refreshing shower and dinner under an unbelievable sky. Jacks or San Camp (D)
Jack’s Camp: While on a trapping expedition in the Makgadikgadi Pans during the 60's, Jack (founder) stumbled upon a site that captured his imagination and led him to establish the first safari camp in this area. The choice of such striking locale owed much to his original taste for the savage beauty of a forgotten Africa.Into these sometimes-harsh surrounds we have introduced luxury unparalleled. Eight green canvas tents fashioned in a classical 1940’s style… authentic, spacious and exceptionally comfortable. Completely refurbished in early 2003, guests will experience en suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, Persian rugs underfoot and cool cotton sheets form a striking contrast with the rugged wilderness viewed from the comfort of one’s own veranda. Impeccable taste…extraordinary experience.
San Camp: The second (more modest and only open April 15-October 31st – the dry season) camp nestles amongst scattered clusters of palm trees on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pan. San Camp offers the Earth, stripped naked. And, such restraint holds its own charms. Six pale khaki canvas tents twinned with a dramatic location combine to create an oasis of civilization in what can be the harshest of stark environments. The result: One of the most romantic camps in Africa! The camp is the Stewart Granger Memorial Collection of 1940s safari tents, with no running water nor electricity but with comfortable beds, cotton sheets, paraffin lamps, wonderful food and personal service. Bathrooms are en-suite with bucket showers and flushing loos.
Day 2-3 Makgadikgadi Pans
Explore and experience the Central Kalahari. One of the last great wilderness areas, preserved from the ravages of man by its elemental severity. Full of extraordinary creatures, perfectly adapted to its climatic whims –Meerkats, Kalahari lion, cheetah, all abound in this desolate realm. It is also a complete desert experience focusing on species unique to the area such as gemsbuck, the endangered brown hyena and springbuck, as well as the geology, archaeology and anthropology of the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi. Jack's and San Camp are the only places where guests are guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyena in the whole of Africa.A visit to the area is essential for anyone interested in evolution and the origins and explanation of the Okavango Delta and Botswana’s big picture. Morning and afternoon game drives, walks and activities. Jacks or San Camp (BLD)
