Dorrigo, Washpool and Gibraltar Range National Parks are just some of a chain of scattered rainforests stretching from Barrington Tops, north of Sydney, to South East Queensland. These Parks, spread inland from Coffs Harbour, north to Grafton and touch on the edge of central Northern NSW.
Departing Sydney’s rat race, we head north for our first nights accommodation on the NSW north coast town of Coffs Harbour, the afternoon can be spent relaxing in this popular holiday destination or capturing afternoon and sunset images around the wharf area. As morning breaks and the golden glow lights up the harbour foreshore, we will head to the beach for the first leg of what will be an amazing journey. From the beach we head up into the World Heritage listed, Dorrigo National Park, and enter lush rainforest surrounding Crystal Shower Falls.
Up early for a sunrise shoot from the Rainforest Skywalk, immortalise the first rays of the sun as they breech the thick canopy above. After breakfast, we will head deeper into more remarkable rainforest on the way to Rosewood Creek with its many pristine waterfalls. Keep your eyes and ears open and your camera at the ready to capture some of the native wildlife that inhabits the area, from songful tunes and queer mimiced sounds of the Lyrebird, to the strange collections of the amorous Satin Bower Bird. At night we will experience a totally different view of this remarkable rainforest, to see and photograph wildlife that only comes out after dark. There is so much to see here, but we have allowed plenty of time, so you won’t miss a thing.
From Dorrigo National Park we travel to the breathtaking banks of Nymboida River, and an evening at Platypus Flat. As dawn breaks, enjoy a walk along the edge of the river with its misty banks and wild water, scenery sure to inspire for the day ahead at Guy Fawkes National Park. Here we enter another World Heritage area, Mt Hyland Nature Reserve, known for its spectacular tree fern lined hillsides. This part of the World Heritage is seldom visited and remains truly unspoilt. The next day experience early morning at Chaelundi Falls, then after a hearty breakfast, it’s off to yet another World Heritage listed location, Gibraltar Range National Park. Camping amongst the rainforest makes it easy to relax and enjoy the excellent walks through the largest stand of coachwood rainforest in Australia and therefore the world. Spotlighting during the evening will offer the chance to capture breathtaking images only possible here at night.
There is plenty of time set aside for relaxed shooting, without the need for treking too far from camp, and this relaxed pace allows the opportunity to catch a glimpse of some of the rare and endangered species of wildlife such as Spotted-tail Quoll, Bandicoot and Parma Wallaby, all of which make this forest their home. By the time you head home, you’re sure to be excited about seeing the spectacular images you’ve taken. Sit back and relax as we bring you safely back to reality, but not before arranging to meet again with your new friends to show off all your handy work.
